The Truth About the Second Amendment: What Democrats Don’t Understand

Tuesday was the anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights, and so, in recognition of that, we decided we would do our best to help educate some of the liberals in the audience– specifically about the second amendment.

We all know the Constitution protects the right to possess firearms, but what does it actually say, and what does it actually mean?

The second amendment states, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Now one of the first things most democrats have been led to believe about the second amendment is it states regulation is a necessary part of the security of a free state. This is only half-correct. The term well-regulated at the time meant well-trained, or adept with firearms, as if to say firearm safety education is of tremendous importance.

The other most democrats have been led to believe is guns can and should be restricted to a select few. The problem with this logic is the possession of firearms is a right, so to restrict access to guns is effectively the government deciding how much– if any– of a certain right someone is deserving of.

Of course there are the frequent cries to gun owners such as, “Why do you need an ‘assault’ rifle?” or “Why do you need more ammo than your gun can shoot?”

The answer is actually quite simple, yet in most cases, insufficient for liberal ears– they can possess these things because they have a right to– it is the only answer needed, and the only answer someone is entitled to.

The argument for constitutional gun rights is not a “cop-out” or an “archaic” argument. In point of fact, there is not one other constitutional right, which is so heavily manipulated and restricted as the second amendment. From habeus corpus to cruel and unusual punishment, each of these rights are never touched or tampered with. So why is it acceptable to do so with the second amendment?

However, the greatest concern democrats seem to have over guns is there safety. Yes, guns are dangerous, they were made to be that way– but more specifically– they were made to be dangerous to those who are dangerous to the gun owner.

Furthermore, crafting laws to make certain guns illegal will not stop madmen from obtaining them, it will only stop lawful gun owners from obtaining them, diminishing their safety, let alone constitutional right. Not only this, but an American citizen is far more likely to die due to malpractice on Obamacare, than from a firearm– there is dangerous hypocrisy here.

In America, rights are all we have. To tamper with them without proper amending is nothing short of treasonous to the authors of liberty.
